Revamping road trips: iOS 17 boosts CarPlay capabilities

Ana sayfa / iOS

Apple’s iOS 17 promises a sea of novel features for iPhone applications, and CarPlay is no exception. While the comprehensive CarPlay revamp that Apple hinted at last year is yet to materialize, several noteworthy features have been introduced.

Communal tunes: Introducing SharePlay for the Music App

In a significant update, SharePlay has been integrated with the Apple Music app in CarPlay, making it a shared experience for all occupants of the vehicle. As long as the car owner possesses an Apple Music subscription and initiates a SharePlay session from CarPlay, passengers can actively participate in curating the musical journey.

The main user generates a QR code that allows passengers to access and augment the in-car Apple Music playlist. Importantly, only the session starter needs an Apple Music subscription, granting cost-free participation to others.

Empowering electric: Enhanced EV charging station features

For electric vehicle owners, the Apple Maps app now offers real-time charging availability information for compatible charging networks. This enhancement aims to simplify the task of locating nearby charging stations during journeys.

Ensuring safer messaging: Updates to Messages App

The Messages app in CarPlay now sports a reimagined interface, making it simpler for users to quickly respond to or revisit messages without substantial distraction from driving.

Personalization push: New wallpaper options

iOS 17 brings fresh wallpaper options to the table, which can now be extended to the CarPlay interface.

Anticipating the future: CarPlay’s upcoming transformation

Despite the silence at WWDC 2023 regarding the new CarPlay experience, Apple had previously shared a glimpse into the future at WWDC 2022. The next-generation CarPlay promises profound integration with vehicles and is expected to hit the roads in late 2023.

Multi-Display mastery: The upcoming CarPlay 2

CarPlay is slated to support multiple displays, encompassing all vehicle displays including the instrument cluster. This development allows Apple to offer a consistent in-car experience and deeper integration with vehicle indicators like speedometer, tachometer, and more.

In the pipeline are also enhancements to the in-car climate control, with CarPlay enabling users to adjust temperature and other in-car climate features. With the anticipated 2023 launch of the revamped CarPlay experience, further enhancements can be expected in future iOS 17 updates. Automakers like Acura, Audi, Ford, Honda, Jaguar, Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Porsche, and Volvo are reported to support the next-gen CarPlay.
